„About the end of grand narratives“ ist eine Dekonstruktion männlicher Stereotypen. Das Werk stellt populäre Projektionsflächen maskuliner Identitäten in Frage und provoziert Fragen um die Zeitgenössische Identifikation von „Mann“.
Die Videoinstallation „About the end of grand narratives“ zeigt vier pointierte Momentaufnahmen aus grossen Filmen, welche in Loops immer und immer wieder gespielt werden. Die Szenen zeigen männliche Heldengeschichten, die unzählige Menschen auf der ganzen Welt berührt, gefesselt und beeindruckt haben. Baltensperger bricht den Moment der Repräsentation auf und verlängert diesen ins Unendliche. Durch den dramaturgischen Bruch der Erzählung verlagert sich die Wahrnehmung zu den Protagonisten. Die klar verorteten Charaktere werden in Frage gestellt und lassen neue Assoziationen zu.
Der Titel des Werkes ist ein Verweis auf Jean-François Lyotards, der das Ende der grossen Erzählungen – wie Religion, Ideologie, oder Fortschritt – als Charakteristikum der post-modernen Gesellschaft bezeichnet. In der heutigen Zeit erfährt
die Erzählung der geschlechtlichen Rollenverteilung ihre Auf-lösung. Baltensperger verbindet Bild und Theorie und stellt dabei die Frage, welche Form geschlechtlicher Identifikation in Zukunft noch haltbar sein könnte.
“About the end of Grand Narratives” is a deconstruction of male stereotypes. The work inquires into popular ikons of masculinity, and provokes the questioning of contemporary identification of “Man”.
The video-installation “About the End of Grand Narratives” shows four trenchant snapshots from eminent films, which are played in infinite loops. The heroic scenes have moved, impressed and captured the imaginations of countless individuals around the world. Baltensperger breaks the moment of the representation open, and extends it endlessly. The narrative is ruptured and perception shifts to the protagonists. The clearly identified characters are opened to doubt, and new associations may be formed.
The title of the work is in reference to Jean-Francis Lyotard, who identified the end of the Grand Narratives – such as Religion, Ideology and Progress – as characteristics of a Post-Modern Society. In present times the narrative surrounding gender roles is also being dissolved. Baltensperger combines image and theory, and asks which forms of gender identification might be acceptable in the future.
