Im September 2007 kam es in Rangun (Myanmar) zu den ersten Massendemonstration gegen das Militärregime seit 1988. Eingeleitet und angeführt wurden die Demonstrationen von Buddhistischen Mönchen und Nonnen. Am 24. September wurden bereits über 100.000 Demonstranten gezählt.
Am 25. September begann das Militär gegen die Demonstrierenden vorzugehen.
Am 27. September wurden die Demonstrierenden auf der Kreuzung Sule Pagoda Rd. / Anawrahta Rd. vom Militär eingekesselt und die Versammlung wurde gewaltsam aufgelöst.
Nach offiziellen Angaben kamen zehn Menschen ums Leben. Inoffizielle Beobachter sprechen von bis zu 200 Toten und mehreren Hundert Verletzten. Zahlreiche Klöster wurden von Soldaten gestürmt. Oppositionspolitiker und Regimegegner wurden verhaftet.
Am 29. September 2007 erklärte die Militärjunta die Revolte als zerschlagen und beendet.
