«Monument to a Monument» am Alpenquai in Zug
«Monument to a Monument» ist eine abstrahierte Form des Matterhorns. Am Seeufer, vor der romantischen Bergkulisse, provoziert die Skulptur eine örtliche Verwirrung und stellt Fragen nach regionalen sowie nationalen Identitäten und deren Vermarktung. Im aktuellen Standortwettbewerb werden nicht nur wirtschaftliche, sondern auch kulturelle Werte indexiert und klassifiziert. Zug als vielschichtiger Ort zwischen Idyll, Tradition und modernem Wirtschaftsstandort wird von aussen vor allem als Domizil internationaler Konzerne und als Akteur im Steuerwettbewerb wahrgenommen. «Monument to a Monument» spielt mit bestehenden Klischees und stellt diese gleichermassen in Frage. Die Skulptur begegnet einer aktuellen Diskussion mit einem Symbol, das als Berg die kulturelle Landschaft prägt und gleichzeitig zur weltweiten Vermarktung der Marke «Schweiz» beiträgt.
Monument to a Monument depicts in abstracted form the Matterhorn. Set on the lakeside, with a romantic mountain backdrop, the sculpture provokes spatial confusion, raising questions of regional and national identity and specifically their marketing. Whilst the competitiveness of a municipality is indexed and classified through economic factors, cultural values are also gaining significance.
Monument to a Monument utilises existent cliché, integrating it at the same time. The sculpture joins contemporary discussion by employing the symbol of a mountain which has deep cultural significance but at the same time is exploited in the worldwide marketing of the brand “Switzerland”.
